The Ewart Johnston papers include personnel papers from 14 September 1916 describing a mistake that was made in processing him from private to second lieutenant. The papers also include mustering forms 1, 2, 3, 9, and 10 that show the paperwork that took place to promote Johnston. Also included is a rough draft for a citation of heroism during an attack at Malbrouck Hill and Consenvoye Woods on 8 October 1918 where 200 prisoners were captured. There is a short diary dated 8-28 October 1918 describing the attack that Johnston and Company L were involved in. The collection includes a letter from Robert D. Johnston, Jr. dated 15 March 1919 asking Ewart Johnston to return home to claim ownership of his family's orchard. His brother wrote the letter at the request of their mother. A copy of Parnet Daily News dated 8 October 1919, published in Lynchburg, Virginia, gives the news about Company L, 116th Infantry. It also lists soldiers that had left, been wounded, or died.
